Separate the identifier from the printed symbol
A barcode is the machine-readable representation of an identifier. GS1 distinguishes a product GTIN from an internal SKU, and UPC-A encodes a GTIN. Your own inventory identifier serves a different purpose from a manufacturer product identifier.
For example, STORE-LAMP-01 might help your staff identify a lamp internally. Printing that text as Code 128 does not transform it into a manufacturer UPC or a globally assigned product number.
Use verified product codes where appropriate
Compare the identifier with the exact product and packaging. Different variants and multipacks need careful review. Do not reuse a code from a similar product to fill a blank field.
PalletMargin uses supported valid product identifiers where available. When an appropriate supported code is absent, its label output can use an internal Code 128 identifier. Review which identifier is printed before building your POS mapping.
Decide how your POS handles condition differences
Two units can have the same manufacturer code but different selling conditions or prices. Your store may need distinct internal inventory records to prevent a damaged unit scanning at the price of a complete one. The correct setup depends on your POS and operating process.
Test one example: scan the complete product, then the discounted product, and confirm what record appears. A price printed on a sticker does not itself update the database consulted by the scanner.
Keep a dependable mapping
Record the product title, identifier, unit price and quantity in the inventory system. Preserve leading zeros in product codes. Check for duplicate internal identifiers before importing a batch.
Do not market internally generated identifiers as newly licensed retail UPCs. Use the store export as reviewed inventory data, and confirm the requirements of any marketplace or retail partner before reusing its codes outside your store.
